Publisher’s Description:
Andreas Gursky’s new Bangkok series forms the basis of this book. Gursky’s photos depict the dark, moving water of Thailand’s Chao Phraya river, whose shimmering surface possesses the qualities of abstract painting. Indeed these photos are reminiscent of some of the most recognisable examples of Modernist Abstraction such as the work of Hans Arp, but they also echo the more hostile patterns of military camouflage. Seductively beautiful on the first glance, it is only in time that the rubbish of civilisation becomes recognisable floating on the surface of the river – the flotsam of a threatening reality moving upon colourful reflections. Gursky alludes to the ecological problems that jeopardise Bangkok, and which shortly after these images were made, culminated in the widespread flooding that devastated great parts of Thailand.

Blackout.
Photographs by Dan Holdsworth.
Steidlville, 2012.
80 pp., 33 color illustrations,
11¼x13”.
Publisher’s Description:
Occupying a space between the documentary and the make-believe, Dan Holdsworth’s photographs transform Icelandic glaciers into a strange and futuristic landscape. In Blackout the landscape is present only as a brooding, eerie image of itself: the blue of the sky has become the deep black of space, while the earth appears in pale negative. This lunar- like terrain humbles the viewer before a foreign, awe-inspiring nature and repositions the notion of the romantic sublime.

Pull My Daisy box set
Robert Frank
Publisher’s Description:
Pull My Daisy is a collectable object containing Robert Frank’s famous film of 1959 on DVD; a text booklet with an introduction, the transcript of the film and lyrics to the opening song; and a photo-magazine of on-set documentary photos by John Cohen.
Pull My Daisy typifies the Beat Generation. Directed by Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie, Pull My Daisy was adapted by Jack Kerouac from the third act of a stage play he never finished entitled Beat Generation. Kerouac also provided improvised narration. It stars Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Larry Rivers, Peter Orlovsky, David Amram, Richard Bel- lamy, Alice Neel, Sally Gross and Pablo, Frank’s then infant son. Based on an incident in the life of Neal Cassady and his wife Carolyn, the movie tells the story of a railway brakeman whose painter wife invites a respectable bishop over for dinner. However, the brakeman’s bohemian friends crash the party, with comic results. Pull My Daisy was praised for years as an improvisational masterpiece, until Leslie revealed in 1968 that the film was actually carefully planned, rehearsed, and directed by him and Frank.

Steidl-Concentric Circles, A Chronicle of Steidl Publishers
by Monte Packham
- Cover art by Jim Dine
- 160 pages
- 17 cm x 24 cm
- Clothbound hardcover
- Steidl
- ISBN: 978-3-86930-024-5
- Publication date: December 2010
Publishers Description:
“Gerhard’s like a Communist. You have to go into the salt mines with him. If you’re willing to go there then you’re like brothers in arms and he’ll do what needs be.” Robert Polidori
Concentric Circles chronicles the time between 26 August 2008 and 27 January 2009 at Steidl Publishers. The book is the first to document the printing and publishing house, and is a window into the processes, experiences and bustle of Düstere Strasse 4, Göttingen.
Comprising a log of hundreds of entries, Concentric Circles retells and records events as they unfolded in their unpredictability and urgency – Günter Grass tapping tobacco into his pipe while refining the typography of his book Die Box, Gerhard Steidl deciphering the arabesque faxes of Karl Lagerfeld, the sudden breakdown of the printing press. These daily entries are enriched by interviews with, and original texts by, some of Steidl’s most important collaborators including Lewis Baltz, Jim Dine, David Bailey, Roni Horn, Karl Lagerfeld, Juergen Teller, Tacita Dean, and Joel Sternfeld. A circle owes its symmetry to its centre, from which every point on the circumference is equidistant. What, then, is the centre of Steidl’s concentric circles, in all their different guises? Perhaps the initial idea from which a book grows; Göttingen, where every Steidl book is crafted; or Gerhard Steidl himself, who founded the company 41 years ago and continues to determine the substance of its creations – the nature of its circles?
Steidl’s concentric circles are in flux: new circles of progress and difficulty constantly emerge, while others dissolve. Look closely and the seemingly empty rings of space between circles are actually imbued with traces of past activities – the memory of circles that once were.

Broken Manual - Special Edition
by Alec Soth, Lester B. Morrison
Steidl
- Limited to 300 copies
Price will increase after the sale of the first 50 copies
- Softcover housed in its own unique book-safe, with a signed and numbered Soth photograph
- Steidl
- Publication date: October 2010
Publisher’s Description:
Created over four years (2006-10), Alec Soth’s newest book represents a significant departure from his three previous Steidl publications. Entitled Broken Manual, Soth investigates the places in which people retreat to escape civilization. Soth photographs monks, survivalist, hermits and runaways, but this isn’t a conventional documentary book on life “off the grid.” Instead, working with the writer Lester B. Morrison, the authors have created an underground instruction manual for those looking to escape their lives.
It is common for artists to follow up the publication of their books with ‘Special Editions.’ But in the case of Broken Manual, this edition is being presented first. Made in an edition of 300, Soth calls this the ‘Ideal Edition’ of Broken Manual. Each copy of this edition is housed inside of another, one-of-a-kind book. These signed and numbered ‘shell’ books are unique and cut by hand. Inside the shell, there is also a small booklet entitled ‘Liberation Billfold Manifest’ and an 8x10” print signed and numbered by Alec Soth and Lester B. Morrison.
